A Fatty’s Best Friend

Now before anyone goes and gets all offended about the title, you should know I’m talking about my twenty-nine year old horse, Zero. He’s the fatty! Which is good, because as a horse gets older they become harder and harder to “keep” fat and healthy. I have to commend my dad and my friend Toni for taking such great care of him this winter in my absence. He looks amazing. And that’s what you’re about to see. You’ve already met Quatro, who is Zero’s bestest buddy. I caught the two of them taking an afternoon siesta in the hay late last week and lucky for us, The Precious was handy, so I can share these two with y’all.

You know I think fat is good. My concern is for my mule, Moonpie, I’ve had for 10 years. He came as an abuse case, and was supposed to be 8. Vet said he was 8 ten years ago. That was 10 years ago, so Moonie is getting old. Dang, now his ribs are showing, he’s dropping feed while eating grain, and it’s hard to tranquilize him. He WILL be tranquilized this spring, and his teeth will be done. I just hope he recovers from the drugs. I love him so.

Someone, very knowledgeable, told me once, that if you have a mule in your herd, you’re going to know who the silent leader is. Moonpie has always allied himself to the leader of the pack. He never leaves their side and he always stands guard while all horse lie down. When the supposed leader leaves, he stands at the gate and does his traditional “hee-haw”. It can be heard down the street, where I ride. When I return, all is normal-Moonpie has his herd together. He is a very homey kind of guy. Gosh, I will miss him when God needs him, more than me.

    • Way to make me cry Brenda! I want a Moonpie. Zach’s dad has always wanted to own a mule. Zach never saw the point. Maybe Quatro is a good start? Quatro brays at me every time he sees me since I started feeding him oats. I think he’d sell his soul the devil for oats!

  6. I love the photos, Zero is certainly doing very well, I love his big round apple like but, very hugable. And your donkey is just as cute & fat. For 29 he is in top condition.

  7. Yeah…’MY’ donkey is pretty cute! His registered name is Iddy Bitty Infinity Quatro.
