Photos of Dolce!

From 12 to 30

Last night, was one of the best nights of my entire life! Those of you that know me know I was this horse crazy little girl- it was all consuming- this out of control passion I had. When I was 11, we moved and I was able to get a horse. I got 2 horses right before my 12th birthday. And now, sixteen years later, at age 30, I helped bring my first baby horse into the world. Dolce was born last night, shortly after midnight. I think she might be the cutest filly I’ve ever seen, but then I could be biased too. I am not sure yet what color she’ll be, but regardless, it’s not an eventt hat will soon be forgotten, and you’ll have to humor me as I post photos (often) of how big she is getting! We’re looking at a future champion!

Horses Being Abandonded

The link above will take you to the article. Sad.
Sad.
So Sad.

Loooong Day…

Here it is 10:15pm and I’m just finishing up supper.

I was up at 6:30 this morning to do some paperwork, and then horseback. Had a lesson at 10, a lesson at 2, a lesson at 5 and a lesson at 6:30. In addition to the fact that I have 7 horses to ride daily.

I didn’t even make it to get hay and feed today; so it has to be on the agenda for tomorrow. I’m swamped over here. Drowning in things to do. I must find a way to get it all done. I need two of me.

Now I’m not complaining mind you; but the kind of day when you have people to deal with and horses that have a mind of their own, well that makes for it being longer. And rarely do the hour lessons only last an hour. It’s more like an hour and fifteen, and hour and a half… well you can see where this is going.

I’m worn out. In a good way. Sort of. Tomorrow I get to do it all over again.

Yes, Let’s Suspend Him.

You’re kidding, right? Have you ever ridden a racehorse (or any horse for that matter) Ms. Guillermo?

NORFOLK, Va. (AP) — People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals is seeking the suspension of Eight Belles’ jockey after the filly had to be euthanized following her second-place finish in the Kentucky Derby on Saturday.

Gabriel Saez was riding Eight Belles when she broke both front ankles while galloping out a quarter of a mile past the wire. She was euthanized on the track.

PETA faxed a letter Sunday to Kentucky’s racing authority claiming the filly was “doubtlessly injured before the finish” and asked that Saez be suspended while Eight Belles’ death is investigated.

“What we really want to know, did he feel anything along the way?” PETA spokeswoman Kathy Guillermo said. “If he didn’t then we can probably blame the fact that they’re allowed to whip the horses mercilessly.”

Eight Belles trainer Larry Jones said the filly was clearly happy when she crossed the finish line.

“I don’t know how in the heck they can even come close to saying that,” Jones told The Associated Press on Sunday. “She has her ears up, clearly galloping out.”

Guillermo said if Saez is found at fault, the group wants the second-place prize of $400,000 won by Eight Belles to be revoked.

Saez, a 20-year-old Panama native, was riding in his first Kentucky Derby. He frequently rides for Jones.

A call to the jockeys’ room at Delaware Park, where Saez raced on Sunday, went unanswered.

Eight Belles, the first filly since 1999 to run in the Derby, appeared fine until collapsing while galloping out after the finish.

The letter to the Kentucky Horse Racing Authority also sought a ban on whipping, limits on races and the age of racehorses, and a move to softer, artificial surfaces for all courses.

Why I Love a Mare

This Filly, Eight Belle got down and dirty against the boys on Saturday’s Derby. As she comes around the final turn she looks done, and you can see her dig in and keep trying. Sad as it is that she fell and was euthanized after the race was over, that is part of the sport, and don’t let anyone tell you these horses don’t love what they do. They’re bred to run; plain and simple. It’s exceptionally sad that her career ended this way, as a filly with her size and grit would have, no doubt, produced some amazing babies.

Finally! For More Than One Reason…

Shuttle and I won our first 2D money this weekend. We finally put together the nearly perfect run, and we ran and ran fast. It must have been relatively smooth, as it didn’t feel fast, but she didn’t make a lot of mistakes either. 2D runs will get us to the NFR if we choose to go that route. Hershey, an outside horse I have, also high loped to a check in the 4D.

Let me explain this “D” system right quick. The NBHA started it several years ago to encourage more people to barrel race. Prior to a D system you had open horses, green horses, $500 novice horses (which means they’ve won less than $500), $1500 novice horses, $2500 novice horses and $5000 novice horses. Once you got past the $5000 in earnings, then you had to run as an open horse against horses that might have been to the NFR. Not every horse can run as fast as Shuttle or the horses that are making the NFR. Some, no matter how hard they try will always run a second off the fastest horses.

This is where the D system comes into play. The 1D or first division is the fastest time of the day at a competition. The second division or 2D is the next set of horses that ran half a second slower. The 3D is horses that ran a second off the 1D horses. And a 4D horse is a full 2 seconds off the time of the 1D horse.

I hope that made sense.

Also tonight, my mare, Streakin Iron, has begun bagging up (which means she’s starting to produce milk for her baby)! We’ll be on baby watch starting…oh, now! The muscles around her tail head are all jiggly and wiggly and she could probably foal any day now. She’s a maiden mare, which means this will be her first baby. I’m so excited I can’t stand it! Her due date is technically May 29th but she can have the baby 3 weeks prior to 4 weeks after that date.

Shuttle’s Latest Run

Photo Software

I want some cool photo editing software- where I can piece together different photos to make one cool photo of a fun size or shape or something.

Maybe I’m making my life harder than it needs to be?
Maybe I already have software like this on my computer?

I don’t know.
I’m not the most computer literate person on the planet.

I also feel like I’ve not been working much lately, and I really haven’t been. I got in a couple good rides on my colts and now the wind is just incessantly blowing and it wears me out, and I need not give these babies reasons to have come-aparts. So I’ll just sit here, and work on what I’d like www.streakiniron.com to look like, and work on www.taylormadeperformancehorses.com and see if I can deal with the boredom of not getting to be horseback (I could ride Shuttle, but she’s missing a shoe- and speaking of that, the horseshoer should be here by now!).

Sigh.

Dear Wind…

Can you please stop blowing so fiercely?

Can you please just die down a bit?

What are you so mad about?

Winter has been gone. There’s no need to chase it away.

What has you so unhappy that you must howl incessantly?

I have horses to ride and things to do outside, and you’re pretty darn good at wearing on a person’s last nerve.

I’d appreciate it if tomorrow, you could simply be a bit quieter, so as to not disturb my horses and me.

Sincerely-

Your-soon-to-be-foe if you don’t knock it off. :D
