When we branded this June, there was a big boned, knobby-kneed, red calf that was pretty weak. We looked at our book and he was two weeks old. He shouldn’t have wobbled around like a newborn, yet there he was.
After the mayhem of branding day subsided, myself and our ranch intern, Melissa, headed out to snag him. His mama wasn’t making very much milk and as such he wasn’t going to grow very well if he stayed with her.
So we put him on the bottle and fed him. And fed him. And rubbed on him. Yesterday we shipped calves for the year and my little red calf, well he didn’t look so small and weak anymore!
Goodbye, Little Red!
