Fall Color

When I was a kid growing up I hated that we had green carpet in our house. I am, remember a child of the 70s. We had yellow linoleum in the kitchen, and yellow kitchen counter tops. I think we had a white icebox, an in counter stove, and if I recall correctly a black oven. But what really got to me was the green carpet. The hall bath that I shared with my sister was also green from the counter tops to the floor (save for the walls. Every wall in our house was some neutral ivory color. What can I say, my mom played it on the safe side!). It was a custom house that my parents had scrimped and saved to purchase and build they way they wanted. But I wasn’t down with the green carpet. I didn’t understand why we couldn’t have something more trendy such as forest green, country blue or the dusty mauve carpet like my aunt had in her home. My mother always used to tell me that earth-tones never go out of style.

I guess she was right, because I look around my house now, with its pretty taupe and earthen red walls, brown tile floor and think, this is so soothing. So calm, so quiet. I’ve got brown wanna-be dupioni silk curtains and swags; orange throw pillows and other than the zebra print chairs, the inside of my house would blend into any national forest- in the fall.

Which is why I believe fall to be my favorite time of year! Now don’t get me wrong. I love springtime, when all the foals and calves are born and we’re surrounded by babies, brandings and green, lush grass. But Fall begins and so does birthday season for us- the cowboy’s daughter, the cowboy and myself all have birthdays within about 12 days of each other. It means we’ve gotten to ride colts all summer and we can now give them a job when it comes time to gather and sort mamas from babies, pull the bulls off the herd, vaccinate babies, and pair them up with their mamas again. It means perfectly sunny, cool, crisp mornings and beautiful afternoons. And it means that the trees and grass shut down for the winter, and the interior of my house would blend right in to the background; that is if it were to be turned inside out and placed near a river bottom that contained some foliage.

The cowboy’s dad found some of that pretty foliage for me to photograph a week or so ago and I thought I’d share it with you- the pretty oranges, yellows and browns of fall. It just makes me want to curl up and read a book and enjoy the peace and quiet of it all.

What thought or feelings does Fall evoke for you? Is Fall your favorite season too? And if it isn’t your favorite season, what is, and why?

A Colorado Condo

While we were on our trip to Steamboat Springs to ride with Buck Brannaman (I say “we” because my friend Sharon came with me to ride with him as well), we got to stay at the Wyndham. I have the World’s Greatest Parents because they own time-shares, and this was one of those times when they were able to share their love with their favorite eldest daughter. I don’t have a single negative thing to say about this condo. It was beautiful. Nearly bigger than our house here on the ranch- and it certainly felt quite spacious. But maybe that’s because I don’t live there? Zach always tells me that if there is any empty spot in the house it will be filled with candles, photos or the like. He says it has something to do with Ovaries. Isn’t he hilarious? His wit is one of the things I love about him!

Enough about that. Let’s get to the awesomeness of the digs we had while in Steamboat.

I secretly or not so secretly, wish my kitchen was this pretty. Or at least had such awesome counter tops. Formica just doesn’t do it for me. On a positive note, I do have red walls. Those make me happier!

I love all the earthy colors.

This year if we get to put in our fireplace, I think my mantel should look like this one!

I don’t know what is with the glare in this photo.

Wouldn’t this soaker tub that was in the master bedroom be just awesome after a day on the slopes?

I thought the dresser in the Master was so pretty:

It was a really relaxing place to stay while we were working our minds and bodies to the bone at the clinic. We even used the fireplace. I think sometimes that it gets cold here early, but it dipped below freezing for a couple nights while we were there.

Thanks mom and dad for sharing the love. It was a really great place to stay!

Cows in the Yard

Having cows in the yard isn’t a terribly common occurrence here but it does happen. And sometimes I’m fortunate enough to have a camera handy when it does.

This was one of those times. It’s the third time this fall that it’s happened.

They’re happy as a lark, eating what little lawn I have and harassing my chickens.

Hello there, Bully Bull!

Please just never-mind the weeds that are growing out of the rock garden surrounding my house. I have been too lazy to pull them.

Clearly I have interrupted his eating by the look on his face.

IMG_8599

Maybe if I head over here to these girls this crazy woman with the camera will leave me alone!

IMG_8602

And I should totally grab a bite or two on the way!

IMG_8603

The only thing that isn’t so fun about having bovines in the yard is what they leave behind. But that’s ok. I can just consider it fertilizer. Now girls, and bull, I’m going to chase you out of the yard if you don’t mind. There’s taller grass in your pasture!

Have a great weekend, everyone!

My Favorite Cowboys

I snapped this photo at a family wedding last weekend, and I am in love with it. I am the luckiest girl alive.

Are they not just ridiculously handsome?

That’s No Bull

Hello? Helloooooo? This thing on? Is anyone out there?

Well at least I know I have the attention of #26!

I’ve been super duper busy, and that’s no bull. But this week, I’m plan to get y’all caught up on my life with photography, kids, horses and recipes! Stay Tuned!

Fun at the River

A couple weeks ago I took the kids to the river. We’ve been several times since the Fourth of July and always it’s been a great time. But this particular time, I took my camera and captured some great shots of them having lots of fun! Kelsey and Kara played “queen” of the inner-tube and Ty just wanted to swim. He’s kind of a water rat that way!

[flickrset id="72157624519540271" thumbnail="square" overlay="true" size="medium"]

That particular day the river might have been about 70 degrees. Since then it’s warmed up a lot and is more the temperature that this former Texas girl is accustomed to!

What are you doing for fun with your family this summer?

Family Love

This is has been a summer of firsts here for the kids.

Nine year old Ty has been doing a lot more riding this summer. So much more that he even had his first ride in the pasture to help us move cows a few weeks ago. He rode his sister’s steady mount, Pommel.

He has also spent plenty of time riding the cutest pony ever, Lil Banjo. Who bucked him off this summer. His face when that happened was absolutely priceless. It was more excitement than fear. Oh to be young again!

And he’s started his first colt- Orphan George, who’s registered as DX Gorgeous Georges. If had I had the energy, I’d show you picture of the two of them, but my fuel level is on empty right now. For now if you want to see what he looked like as a baby, here you go.

Since his first ride out in the pasture, he and Kelsey have taken a couple rides together. The other day I was able to capture them riding together on film. Enjoying the day, and the company of each other. Kelsey is riding her horse Hope, and Ty is riding, Kelsey’s horse, Pommel.

Short of the technology in our world, and of course the trampoline, I think one could consider our life a little bit like “Little House on the Prairie”.

What do you do during the summer with your kids and family?
