Me Me Me Me Me….

I am going to be gone this weekend to a clinic- remember I mentioned this a couple weeks ago? So you’ll get to read some awesome writing from some other bloggers out there, beginning tomorrow. I may be around this weekend, or I may not- I’m not sure how much time I’ll have but you can bet, when I do get back on Monday night, I’m going to have enough  photos and fodder to keep us entertained for quite some time.  In the meantime I have been a bad, bad, lazy, lazy Spinner so I thought it was time to join in again.

This week, the Keeper of Sprite- also known as Jen, tasked us with writing as spin about ourselves. Scary I know.  And since there’s been some changes in my life, I figured I would write about the things I’ve learned about myself in the past couple years.

To begin with I have learned that life can be stress free. Yes, I actually live in a world with no worries and no cares. Don’t get me wrong, I do fret about the occasional bill, or if money is tight one month, how we’re going to pay it, but inevitably these things always work themselves out.  It is what it is, and if I can’t change it, I am not going to worry about it. I will do what I can to affect the outcome, but if I can’t affect it, I am not going to fret. I have way less knots in my back as a result of this.

I have also learned, just in the past couple of weeks, that my actions are my choices. And if someone doesn’t like my choices, that’s their problem, NOT mine. Only I have to live with myself (well the Cowboy lives with me too and he desires nothing for me but my happiness).  I let two ex-husbands control me, friends don’t get that option.  I let that go on too long.  And if that *friend* wants to control what I say to whom, and what I do and to whom and why, they’re not really my friend to begin with.

I have learned that I do not have to have people in my life whose only desire is to sabotage my every move, every desire of my heart or who need to tear me down to build themselves up. That person has no place in MY life.  And I’m better for it.

If someone who is your *friend* desires to re-asses the friendship every few months, because you annoy them, they hate your blog, they believe you are fake, and/or that you desire to have a million and one friends you don’t need them either. It is never okay for anyone to treat you badly, and if they’re doing it in an under-handed manner and it’s hard to spot, that’s even less forgivable. That said, life is too short for bitterness or childish behavior, so I will continue to be me, and be the girl I love, the girl that the cowboy loves, the girl that lots of people find fun. I won’t harbor animosity.

I have also learned that I am not a quitter. When the going got rough and tough in my previous two marriages, I didn’t throw in the towel at the first sign of unrest. Like a horse that has trouble understanding what I’m trying to teach it, I did everything in my power to see if the situation(s) could be resolved.  I didn’t just sell that horse and get another one. When it became clear that it couldn’t be resolved, that is when I left. I am sick to death of the attitude that, I can’t blame my previous lack of self confidence on the exes, because I’m the one that stayed. Until you’ve been in a situation with an abusive spouse you better keep your mouth shut.  Again, my choice, is my choice, not yours.  And you don’t get to judge me for MY choice.

I am learning that I can live my life without the approval of my parents or *friends*.  That I am free to be who I want, make the choices I want, and that they are between me and my God.

I have learned that I can spot passive/aggressive behavior a mile away.

I have learned that psychic vampires will suck the life out of you.

I have learned that true friends love you despite your quirks. In fact, some of them love you for them!

I have learned that letting go is sometimes easier said than done, but I’m going to do it.

A Fun-Filled Weekend

Well I’m back! I’m not sure yet if I’m going to share the videos from the barrel race or not- but I am going to share all about what Zach and I did, and try not to bore you with my drivel about how much I love him and blah, blah, blah. I would have for sure shared my pretty, 3/4 speed run with you, but my videographer missed the first barrel. The runner in front of me was a scratch, and so I came in early and Zach wasn’t ready!

I’d like to take this moment to thank all the great girls that kept y’all entertained while I was gone. Let’s give them all a virtual round of applause, shall we? I should also shout-out to Brenda, a totally awesome client who made Friday’s great day possible by getting to the barrel race Thursday to stand in line and get us exhibition runs for Friday on her horse and for Gump! I couldn’t go because I thought Zach was getting in at 5pm that day, and the books opened at 4 that afternoon. And I clearly can’t be two places at once!

Thursday Zach surprised me by getting in several hours early! I must have missed it when he told me his flight was getting in at 1pm because last I’d heard it was a 5pm arrival. When he calls me from Rapid City on Thursday morning he was like, I should be to Texas by 1pm! Needless to say I was ecstatic! I graced the family with my famous shrimp pasta on Thursday night, and then Friday we were up and at ‘em to get to the barrel race.

Friday night’s run was really slow, but my horse did everything right, so I can’t and shouldn’t be upset about that.

Saturday we ran over a second faster, but even that was still way off the pace. But that was fine, because we learned that my horse is so long-strided, as one of my commenters mentioned, that it’s very hard to judge and get your timing right for setting him up to turn and be successful. I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again- Gump is unlike any horse I’ve ever ridden before- he’s not exceptionally ratey (which means he’s not jonesing to turn a barrel) but he is very fast, and he’s what we’d consider to be a free-runner. He’s broke, but not as broke as he could be, so as we get more and more broke, we’ll get better and better at running.

Sunday’s run was probably one of the best first barrels we’ve ever had, but our second barrel, was a slight disaster. The third barrel was good and I was less in his way- than I was on run #2. All in all I’d say the weekend was very successful and I had a great time. I got to see a lot of friends, and by Sunday night was not only sad because Zach was leaving the next day , but I was absolutely worn out.

That’s the recap of the weekend’s events. It rained again on Monday, and as such is a muddy mess today. The good news is that it’s sunny and beautiful outside! So hopefully the sun combined with this north wind will help us dry out and I might be able to get on a riding schedule before the end of the week. That would make me extra happy!

Have a great day!

xo

Push (A Lesson in Friendship)

Here’s another great post from another fun girl, a fellow barrel racer named Sarah:

Do you ever listen to the crowd or the announcer while competing? I have to admit, I do. Even while running my horse I’m still listening for support. I love hearing my friends yell “PUSH”. It makes me try harder. Yeah, that might make me a little co-dependent…although I prefer to think of it as multi-tasking. Whichever it is, supportive friends are great to have.

I am in the process of training my mare on barrels. I recently moved into a bunkhouse on my friend’s property. There’s room for my horse, there’s an arena, and BLM land nearby for riding. After years of having to drive to where my horse was boarded and then hook up the truck and trailer to haul somewhere to ride, I am in heaven. What makes it even more nice is having my friend 50 feet away to motivate me to ride on the days I’m not planning to. How does this relate to training my mare on barrels?

Here goes my conversation with my friend this morning:

Friend: Did you ride this morning?

Me: Nope. I rode the last few days, I’m giving her a couple days off.

Friend: What is she seven this year? (She’s actually eight) Are you on the ten year training plan?

Me: Um, yeah. Maybe I should ride tomorrow.

Friends are great. They care about us and can see our blind spots. Because they see things that we can’t (or don’t want) to see, they can push us forward into better versions of ourselves.

Without friends pushing us how would we get past fears? How many people would have tried cigarettes and alcohol? (Not necessarily the best push.) How would we know when we are being wimpy, or borderline lazy? Friends are there to push us into situations, and laugh because when they pushed we fell on our butt!

I’m writing this because I appreciate when my friends push me. I hope my friends don’t mind when I push them. While competing on horses, we push them to give their best performance (and horses make the best kind of friends). Pushing is a great way to show someone you care. So go on. Go push someone today.

I found this post to be quite relevant to my current situation and wish very much that I had more friends that were like Sarah’s! I am so glad that she shared!  If you’d like to read more from Sarah, you can find her at over at Rock-n-Rodeo Girl.

The New Mexico Cowgirl

I have a surprise for you! You thought you might read a little about life on the ranch for a cowgirl in South Dakota, but as the resident cowgirl is literally running around in circles at the Jurassic Classic this weekend, you’re just going to have to refocus about 1200 miles to the south.  My name is Thea and I’m a New Mexico Cowgirl – so welcome to a brief look at cowgirl life in the Land of Enchantment!

When I learned that Miss Jenn was entertaining the idea of a few guest posts for this weekend I jumped at the chance to tell you all a little about how life, ranching and horse wrangling differs out here in the *high desert.  I am blessed to be living and working on the historical San Augustine Ranch nestled in the foothills on the east side of the Organ Mountains in southwestern New Mexico, where the love of my life and full time cowboy manages the day-to-day activities of a commercial and registered Hereford cow-calf operation … I am self-appointed Saddle Boss (turns out you don’t get paid for self appointed positions, but they let me keep my horses so I call it a win!).

Ranching in the high mountain desert country is a simultaneously a rough and rewarding experience.  The San Augustine is comprised of approximately 15,000 acres of deeded and BLM leased land where about 150-200 cow-calf pairs reside under our care.  Also calling the San Augustine home is a capable remuda of ten cow-eating steeds … nearly half of which belong to me!

The annual rainfall in our area is about 10” per year; however, the ranch itself is lucky to be in the generous keeping of a mountain rain shadow that results in a historical average of about 20” of rain annually.  With that mountain blessing comes the added challenge of exceptionally rugged and rocky terrain, meaning less forage than would be available in the open desert plains.

Given these checks and balances, the conservative stocking rate of about nine animal units (AUs) per section (about 640 acres) as reported for areas in the Chihuahuan Desert is probably a good estimation for our area as well.  (This is of course just a best estimate on my part as I’m no range scientist and am certainly not qualified to calculate the exact forage pounds per acre here that would provide a more accurate estimation!)  As you’ve often heard on this blog, “grass is not infinite,” and that what may sound like expansive acres of land does not necessarily translate into endless quantities of quality feed – this makes proper range management and diligent pasture rotation essential to a successful ranching operation.

If you break out a pencil and paper (or a calculator if you’re lazy like me) and do a little quick math, you’ll discover that works out to be about 70 acres per AU, and assuming a horse is equal to roughly 1.25 AUs (depending on who you ask), in theory we need around 875 acres to sustain our modest herd of hard working ranch ponies.  A little less than twice what they’d need living on the range in prairies of South Dakota!  When you look at it like that, it’s easy to see that diligent pasture management is not optional – ranchers are excellent at rationing precious limited resources.  (Jenn, please note my 17 year old mare has requested relocated retirement with you if possible.)

Growing up in the lush green land of evergreens and glacial lakes in northern Idaho, it has taken time for me to warm up to the dry, rugged desert landscape and truly wrap my brain around the fact that water and grass are not an endless resource.  They call it the Land of Entrapment Enchantment for good reason though, and I have truly fallen in love with this enduring, evolving and persistent landscape.

I spend my weekends in the saddle following trails that were cut hundreds of years ago by ranchers first settling the gritty southwest – land where American history literally unfolded.  I am ridiculously blessed to be living a lifestyle that seems to be disappearing at an alarming rate, making it feel even more critical that I impart any taste of it I can with the rest of the world.

Thanks for taking a moment to let me share it with you here.

*Your resident cowgirl LOVES the high desert, and Thea, if your mare would like to come live with my boss gelding, Zero, he’d love to have a mare in his herd! If you enjoyed this installment from Thea, you can read more about her here!

Craziness, Guests and The Cowboy

Easy Jet Black at Jurassic Classic

I have been really busy this week, as you’ve probably noticed by my lack of posting, and the fact that I’m behind on my blog reading too. I will do my best to get caught up, but it will have to wait until Monday- when I’m done with this crazy weekend. The Cowboy got into town yesterday, just in time for a weekend-long barrel race! The Jurassic Classic is one of my favorites, and I haven’t been able to run there since 2004. The world’s best client (who happens to be mine) drove to Glen Rose yesterday to get us entered for some Exhibition (practice runs) for today, while I picked up Mr. Hotness from the airport and gave a goat tying lesson. That also freed up my afternoon to have him help me with some horses, which was just awesome. I’m so glad to see him. Y’all really have no idea.

So instead of try to blog this weekend while the love of my life is in town, and I’ll be in and out, I’ve lined up some guests! These will be my first guests and I’m so excited. I put out a desperate call on twitter yesterday and had some great cowgirl/ag folks step forward. Be sure to stop by to see what these awesome girls have to say!

Here’s hoping everyone has as great a weekend as I’m going to have!

XO

It Wasn’t Pretty

But it got the job done.

Last Thursday we went to a barrel race, Gump and I. We won a check. It wasn’t a very big one, and we were way off the pace, partly because I was behind him the entire time, but partly because I was halfway scared of letting him really run in that arena. I know. I gotta get over it. But the check was big enough to pay for my fees and my diesel and buy supper at the Whataburger (if that’s what I’d have wanted to do with the money). By the way, Whataburger is a Texas tradition and if you’ve never eaten at one, you’re missing out. They now dot the South. I digress.

Last night we went to another barrel race. At a new facility. Well the facility isn’t new, but it’s under new ownership and it’s new to me. So there. One of the best parts of being where I am, is that there are barrel races to go to almost every night, somewhere nearby. Last night’s drive? Twenty Two miles. There isn’t even a gas station within 22 miles where I live!

The ground was good, I saw some good friends, made some new ones, and generally had fun.

And we won another check. Albeit it was an ugly run; again. It got the job done, paid for my fees and my fuel. I really don’t like going to barrel races and running at the bottom. Though I’m sure there are some people in my world that believe that’s the only place I’ll ever run. Whatevs. I’m inclined to believe in bigger and better things for myself so I will keep plugging away. Though it would be nice to stop fighting my head. Any sports psychologists out there? Part of it is me having expectations that my horse simply can’t meet right now, and part of it is me just not having made enough runs consistently. I have to tell myself that it takes run, after run, after run, after run, after…well you get the picture, to get into some timing and rhythm with my four-footed friend, and so I must continue to persevere.

In the meantime, I will take the small victories- the fact that my horse didn’t run off with me. That he turned a pretty second barrel last week, even though I asked late. That we are beginning to tune into each other more and that while we work on being “together” I can finance my trips along the way.

Today it’s snowing. Right this very minute. At the obscenely early hour in which I awoke. I don’t really mind being an early bird, but this is way too early. Especially for a day when it’s snowing. Now if you’ll excuse me, I think I must try and go back to bed.

Spinning in Necessity

As is per usual for this week’s Spin Cycle, I procrastinated and waited until the morning it was due to write it and turn it in. This week’s topic is on things you can’t live without. I guess I wouldn’t even get this done if it weren’t for Father Time.

The smart ass in me wants to say that I can’t live without life- and obviously this week’s events clearly have put that in the forefront of my mind.

However, I don’t think Jen quite had that in mind when she thought up this week’s subject so I’ll see how short I can make this list.

While I would manage/or am managing to survive without the following life just wouldn’t be the same if you’re me:

Zach- really this one should be self explanatory. He treats me better than anyone ever has. Loves me more than I believed it was humanly possible to love, and puts up with me when I have psychotic woman moments (which are few and far between).

Horses- God’s original therapist. I don’t need to say more.

My trusty, cast iron skillet- My mother doesn’t have one, and do you know how many meals I’ve cooked since I’ve been here? Two. Dos. That’s it. She was so excited to have me around; then I go and disappoint because cooking in her pots and pans is simply not the same. Plus she keeps different things in her kitchen than do I, so every time I want to cook something I have to go to the grocery store first. Not something that the woman who hates to hook and un-hook her horse trailer really enjoys doing.  I am, however, still alive and probably weigh less for it!

The internet- it’s my lifeblood. Ok, well not really. But I do love it. I can shop on it, talk to and keep up with friends with it, and now I can see Zach on it via Skype and the nifty invention known as the web-cam!

A Cell Phone- Maureen covered this one nicely.

A big truck and trailer- obviously I need this so my therapists and I can go places and hang out.

I’m also inclined to add the sun to this list, because I’ve seen it so infrequently lately that I now know, I could never live in Seattle.

What is it that you couldn’t live without? I’d love to know!

Tomorrow’s Not a Guarantee

Yesterday (2.17.2010) I buried my friend.  A girl that was the same age as me. A woman who was a wife. A mother. She left behind a 7yo daughter. There were so many stories told. So  much that was simply put, just Jaime.

I’m sure this isn’t the right way to describe the day, but it was interesting  to say the least.  Many of us who had grown up together were reunited. I got to see people who I hadn’t seen in 14 (or more) years! See what they look like now (some of them I had trouble recognizing), how many children they have, what they’re doing with their lives.  We have a pastor (who presided over the funeral services and did a superb job, I might add). There’s some folks in construction; one in the oil fields, one going back to school to become an architect; Marketing/Management and stay at home moms. Then there’s me, still rodeoing and pursuing horses as my passion.

In talking  with my friends, so many of them didn’t remember things that we did to each other- it was specifically evident that all these things we saw as a big deal, things that caused us strife all those many years ago were so trivial- so meaningless in the scheme of things.  There were even apologies.  I love that good friendships transcend time- it seems that time stands still and you can go years without seeing someone and in a blink of an eye, you’re re-united and you pick up where you left off. To me it’s a sign of security- of realizing that you love/liked/enjoyed this person’s company and what may/or may not have happened 10, 12, or 14 years ago doesn’t matter.  What does matter is that you are still around to enjoy this life. To make the most of every minute, which is what our friend Jaime did.

I was thinking on my way home how if I’d known at 17 what I know now, life would have been so much easier. But you know what?  I wouldn’t appreciate that knowledge.  I think that if you’ve got half a brain you realize that with knowledge and age and experience comes wisdom. My friend Brandi and I discussed the fact that an 18 year old boy really has nothing good on his mind when he’s interested in a 16 year old girl!  What business does he have with her? At 16, of course you think it’s cool that an 18 year old boy is interested in us, and our parents are just so old and so uncool because they’re not cool with it; rightly so.  And now, we’re concerned about it. Funny how time and perspective and age change things.

Yesterday was good for me, not because we said goodbye to someone that was too young to die, but because it renewed me.  Because each day we get to live is a gift from God.  We aren’t guaranteed tomorrow, so we should make the most of each day.   So I will ask each of you to remind me of that when I get down on myself, or get in the dumps about something.  And I will try to do the same for you. We can’t forget that This Moment, is our life.
