A Little Re-Design

October 9, 2012 by ~The South Dakota Cowgirl~ 5 Comments

I’m going to let you in on a little secret.

Contrary to popular belief (much thanks to the Pioneer Woman, I think) most rancher’s wives I know, don’t have big sprawling homes, with hundred thousand dollar kitchens, or a guest house in which to cook. Most of us don’t have huge homes at all. The average American home is about 2700 sq ft. Ours is barely over 1100 with 4 bedrooms and 2 baths.

The “master” is 11.5 x 11.5 with a 5×7 bath and a closet that’s about 2 feet deep by 54 inches wide- nice, right? So, as you can see, space is at a premium here. I see nothing wrong with compact homes, but every inch of space must be utilized efficiently. I am certain I’m not alone in my predicament.

I will admit, I’m not one of the world’s best housekeepers either. I like things to be neat as a rule, but clean isn’t something I aspire to do (save for the kitchen). I live in gumbo country, on a ranch, off a gravel road. Dirt is part of my life. The sooner one embraces that, the sooner one can be happy.

I’ve run into quite a snag with where to put my jewelry- not only the jewelry I keep and make for myself, but the pieces I make to sell too. I obviously have limited storage space. This past week, we made a trip to Rapid City, where I picked up a large number of accessories for my upcoming craft fair booth (I promise, there will be more on this later). The accessories I chose, will look great in the booth, and when not in use there, because I’m low on space, will pull double duty as storage in the master bedroom.

Cute no?

I have this really pretty antique dresser in our room, and the top of it has become the catch all for stuff. Jewelry, books, trash, who knows, really. It got completely out of control. Warning- the following pictures show a mess.

Pardon the dust.

Yeah, it’s a mess. You were forewarned.

And now, it looks like this:

I didn’t take photos of how I organized the wall, but I will tell you how I started.

I started with putting the red mirror, in a place where I could easily see myself, because that’s what a mirror is for, after all.

Then I placed the three round metal/crystal hangers.

Once that was done, I put up the pretty turquoise door pulls:

I placed those in a location where I could put long necklaces, since the other side of the wall has the light-switch.

After those were up, I added these cute little floral crown hangers.

These are good for hanging shorter items.

I gave everything a good dusting, threw away all the trash, put the nook in a new location, along with the camera lenses (someday, y’all, I WILL have an office/studio for such things), and then sorted through all my earrings, that were previously, just set in the bottom of the silver trays that held each cross.

Cuffs and bracelets found a new place to live- on the crosses:

Earrings and rings now live in two cute little boxes:

And that’s actually a good place for silver, since oxygen and light make them tarnish faster.

Now, I have a pretty place to put my jewelry, stay organized, and get ready for my day!

How have you utilized the space, or lack-thereof, in your home?

Happy Trails!

Spread the Love!

About ~The South Dakota Cowgirl~

Jenn Zeller is the creative mind and boss lady behind The South Dakota Cowgirl. She is an aspiring horsewoman, photographer, brilliant social media strategist and lover of all things western.

After a brief career in the investment world to support her horse habit (and satisfy her mother, who told her she had to have a “real” job after graduating college), she finally took the leap and stepped away from a regular income; trading the business suit once and for all for cowgirl boots, a hat, and jeans. She has not looked back.

When Jenn first moved to The DX Ranch on the South Dakota plains, she never imagined she’d find herself behind a camera lens capturing an authentic perspective of ranching, and sharing it with others. Jenn has always been called to artistry, and uses music, writing, images, home improvement, and her first true love of horses to express her ranching passion.

Horses are the constant thread and much of her work centers around using her unique style of writing to share her horsemanship journey with others in publications such as CavvySavvy, the AQHA Ranching Blog, the West River Eagle, the family ranch website, and her own website.

Using photography to illustrate her stories has created other opportunities -- Jenn’s brand “The South Dakota Cowgirl” has grown to the level of social media “Influencer”. This notoriety has led to work with Duluth Trading Company, Budweiser, Wyoming Tourism, Vice, Circle Z Ranch and Art of the Cowgirl, to name a few. She also serves as a brand ambassador for Woodchuck USA, Arenus Equine Health, Triple Crown Feed and Just Strong fitness apparel. Her photography has been featured by Instagram, Apple, TIME Magazine, The Huffington Post, and Oprah Magazine. Jenn’s work has been published internationally, has been seen in several books and has graced the covers of several magazines.

Jenn became a social media influencer by accident when she started to explore Instagram as a way to share her life on the ranch with folks that don’t get to experience it. It’s grown into an incredible platform that she uses to empower women, create an environment for self improvement and share life on the ranch.

When she’s not working, she loves to drink coffee, play with her naughty border collie named Copper, start ranch colts, and run about the country chasing cans. Her mother still thinks she doesn’t have a “real” job.

Cute, cute, cute! Now that we’re living in a smallish studio/renovated barn, we’re attempting to figure out the best way to maximize our space. It’s certainly not easy! Since our lives are run by our books and tack and we are currently without a tack room or bookshelf, we’re starting to get pretty creative with shelving, hooks and racks!

This is awesome!! I’ve been wanting to do something creative with my jewelry like this for awhile instead of keeping it in a box on my shelf. I especially like the round metal/crystal hangers! Where did you find those? Would Hobby Lobby have something similar?
