Horses and Kids and Calves

October 26, 2009 by admin 3 Comments

It was a week ago today at about 6:30pm or so when I got a text from Zach’s daughter with a photo of her ankle in it, telling me she was going to the ER. I took one look at it and just knew it was broken.

He took one look at it and said, there is no way it’s broken. It has to be sprained. There’s too much swelling for it to be broken.

Turns out, with no happiness to Kelsey, that we were both right. She sprained one side and broke the other.

We got to have her and her little brother, Ty for the weekend. She’s in pretty good spirits, despite the fact that she is done with volleyball for the season and despite the fact that she can’t ride her horse either. She has a Viking’s purple cast with gold sprinkles in it, until Tuesday, when the orthopedic surgeon will look at new x-rays and decide if it is healing good enough to NOT need surgery.

I am really enjoying having the kids around. And this weekend, was no exception. We had Kelsey and Ty; Zach’s niece Cindy and Julissa, and his great niece, Lauren. I have to say a house-full of good, laughing kids is always a fun time. It’s not helping with my baby fever.

While it might have been dreary and wet outside, inside it was sunny, happy place to be.

Saturday morning Zach brought in the saddle horses (which included Gump and Dino). I haven’t seen Gump in at least 2 weeks, and my once, hard to catch horse, was sooooo glad to see me, he walked right up and wanted me to rub on him. Which of course, I gladly did. He is a furry, muddy mess, and he’ll look like that, no doubt for most of the winter- at least until I get him to Texas, where we won’t have any gumbo mud to roll around in. His little brother, Dino had nothing to say to me, as he’s busy worrying about which of his fellow 2 year olds he can chase around and play in the mud with.

Saturday afternoon, found us loading up the truck – Zach, Kelsey, Myself and Zach’s great nephew, Damien (photos coming soon) to check on the mare herds and see how big all the babies are. Kelsey’s mares were glad to see her and she has some of the nicest babies on the place.

This morning brought us sunny skies, and if it stays this way, well, we might actually be able to get everyone’s calves shipped and on trucks this week. They’ll be going to feedlots, for those of you wondering, where they’ll become some yummy steak and hamburger for the good folks of the USA.
In the meantime, I am going to finish my coffee and try to see what the rest of you good folks did this weekend. Happy Monday y’all!

Sparkles in the cast?! When I broke my ankle years ago my only option was blue wrap. The stuff they are coming up with these days!

Oh no! Poor Kelsey! I sure hope it doesn't require surgery. It's obvious how much she LOVES to ride and I bet that breaks her heart. Even without surgery, how long we talking for recovery?

Sounds like a GREAT weekend! Can't wait to see pic's, and I was wondering about "round up". Hope you get to do it and hope it goes well!

I have weak ankles and this made me draw my knees up to my chest and repeated moan, "Ow ow ow ow OWWWW!"

Poor thing – I hope she doesn't need surgery.
