Shuttle Update 6/21

June 21, 2008 by admin 1 Comment

She is no better/ no worse today.

They reset her back shoes yesterday with a special sort of shoe that raises her heel which is theoretically supposed to help alleviate pressure on her digital flexor tendon, so as to prevent laminitis (it’s why Barbaro had to be put down) from setting in on her back left foot. They re-shod the right foot too.

Now, I’m all for doing what needs to be done to get my mare healthy again (and we’re talking about 6 months to 1 year, or more, before she’s sound again) but I’m a bit peeved about the fact that they didn’t call me to ask about that; they didn’t offer me the chance to have my shoer out to do it. They just did it.

I don’t know how to address this, or how I really feel about it.

I’m also a bit irritated that the attending vet can’t give me a lot of the answers to my questions as he’s just too wet behind the ears to know.

The head surgeon will be back on Monday and I will be able to chat with him then, so hopefully I’ll get some better answers.

I guess my concern is that I would like to know if there is some sort of statistical evidence concerning how long the type of bacteria infecting her joint normally takes to kill- apparently we’re using the right drugs. Another thing I’d like to know, is how many times do we open her up and flush her before they throw in the towel and say this isn’t working? How long do we give it before we change antibiotics?

So many questions. So few answers.

Spread the Love!

You seem to be going through a rough period in your life. Have faith and things just work themselves out.
