The Country Mash-up

January 9, 2015 by ~The South Dakota Cowgirl~ 4 Comments

I don’t keep it a secret that there’s not a lot of new country songs I enjoy. Very few in fact.

Florida Georgia line. Nope.
Cole Swindell: Sigh.
Luke Bryan: Gag me with a spoon.
Blake Shelton: he gets a pass on some things.
Parmalee: What the heck kind of name is that? And why is your music awful?
Chase Rice: Who is he again?

This video was shared with me and in it, the artist, mashes six songs together. It’s pretty sad that they’re all basically the same song with the same formula.

I don’t know about you, but to me, this isn’t country music. It’s pop, with a “country” feel. And it’s sad. Plus, I hate hearing about flip flops, and swimsuits when it’s -5 outside. And I despise hearing about and jacked up “trucks” (don’t they know they’re pickups?”). There’s got to be something more substantial to write about, right?

I miss Keith Whitley. Can I get an amen? In the meantime, you should all go check out my gal, Kacey Smith. She’s got a great sound!

Happy Trails!

About ~The South Dakota Cowgirl~

Jenn Zeller is the creative mind and boss lady behind The South Dakota Cowgirl. She is an aspiring horsewoman, photographer, brilliant social media strategist and lover of all things western.

After a brief career in the investment world to support her horse habit (and satisfy her mother, who told her she had to have a “real” job after graduating college), she finally took the leap and stepped away from a regular income; trading the business suit once and for all for cowgirl boots, a hat, and jeans. She has not looked back.

When Jenn first moved to The DX Ranch on the South Dakota plains, she never imagined she’d find herself behind a camera lens capturing an authentic perspective of ranching, and sharing it with others. Jenn has always been called to artistry, and uses music, writing, images, home improvement, and her first true love of horses to express her ranching passion.

Horses are the constant thread and much of her work centers around using her unique style of writing to share her horsemanship journey with others in publications such as CavvySavvy, the AQHA Ranching Blog, the West River Eagle, the family ranch website, and her own website.

Using photography to illustrate her stories has created other opportunities -- Jenn’s brand “The South Dakota Cowgirl” has grown to the level of social media “Influencer”. This notoriety has led to work with Duluth Trading Company, Budweiser, Wyoming Tourism, Vice, Circle Z Ranch and Art of the Cowgirl, to name a few. She also serves as a brand ambassador for Woodchuck USA, Arenus Equine Health, Triple Crown Feed and Just Strong fitness apparel. Her photography has been featured by Instagram, Apple, TIME Magazine, The Huffington Post, and Oprah Magazine. Jenn’s work has been published internationally, has been seen in several books and has graced the covers of several magazines.

Jenn became a social media influencer by accident when she started to explore Instagram as a way to share her life on the ranch with folks that don’t get to experience it. It’s grown into an incredible platform that she uses to empower women, create an environment for self improvement and share life on the ranch.

When she’s not working, she loves to drink coffee, play with her naughty border collie named Copper, start ranch colts, and run about the country chasing cans. Her mother still thinks she doesn’t have a “real” job.

Give your horse or dog, or cat the gift of mobility.

I hate country songs that mention high school, grandparents, childhood, things done in high school, cars/trucks/pickups … really cliched. It’s like their trying to reach their target demographic, very fake. Songs that mention grandparents are invariably sappy. So uncreative. I like most of the artists on the Sirius/XM station ‘Prime Country’. Pam Tillis is one of my favorites. I know I’m old and don’t follow current artists really. Plus, there is a distinct southern bent to most of it – nothing ever about the western part of the country (Texas is not the west to me), and never the Dakotas either now I think of it. I’m from California.

So very true – yet another reason I’m good with listening to some local talent or Brenn Hill, The Younger Brothers Band or even some Don Edwards. We’ve been using songs from old black and white movies as lullabies for the boy. Initiating him early.

YES! What is happening to country music? There have been a few radio stations around here that have thrown in a few 90s/2000s songs back in the rotation, but, for the most part, it’s bad! I’ve gone more bluegrass/folk as a result.
