Since moving to the ranch and learning more about starting colts, I have learned that the groundwork you do with your horse (rideable or not) can never get too good. In fact, on occasion, we’re known to go through the steps with our going saddle horses, simply to check them out. Or, maybe they’re lugging on the end of the lead-rope, so we may go back and help remind them to not lollygag on the end of the lead. Regardless of the reason, we believe that what you do on the ground with your horse, directly relates to how they will ride under saddle. The better they are on the ground, the easier the translation will be when we throw a leg over them.
