Dino isn’t the first horse I’ve ridden or put into the hackamore. There have been many photos posted here of my horse Gump (Dino’s older half brother) in the hackamore, but Dino is by far the softest horse I’ve gotten ready for the next progression in making a bridle horse.
Last week we drifted heifer pairs across the yard to their summer pasture and it was my first outside ride in the hackamore. I’ve had a few rides indoors in it but decided it was time to go outside and commit to the next step in making a one-handed horse.
After we got the pairs drifted I went through the gate and took a little trip through the pasture to enjoy the gorgeous day.
Our first outside ride in the hackamore couldn’t have gone better, really. I’m very anxious to keep working and see how good we can get things!
Isn’t Dino handsome?
We will be riding with Buck Brannaman over Memorial Day weekend and I’m anxious to see what advice he has for me! Even if his advice is go back to the snaffle! It’s all about the journey, friends!
Happy trails!

Gorgeous. Love the mecate pattern. 🙂
Dino is handsome : ) I usually ride at home in a snaffle or a hackamore, it’s always my goal to stay soft and off of my mare’s mouth at all times. It’s nice to have a horse who doesn’t need the bit and can go both ways.
