Coffee From Haiti for Haiti

January 28, 2014 by ~The South Dakota Cowgirl~ 3 Comments

Some of you will remember that last May I headed to Lexington, Ky for the Alltech International Ag Symposium. What an amazing experience. I made some great friends, met folks who’re involved in ag from all around the world, learned a lot, and of course had fun! I got to visit the Kentucky Horse Park, and hang out in a state that I’ve always wanted to visit!

Just a week or so ago, I got a package in the mail, and lo and behold it was coffee.

I kind of love coffee. A lot!

Now this just wasn’t any coffee.

fair-trade-coffee-original-2T, coffee with a cause, haitian grown coffee, coffee from haiti, haiti coffee

First off, I wasn’t expecting it. But secondly it was a gift from the good folks at Alltech.

Second, it’s coffee from the ravaged nation of Haiti.

Here’s the story (from their website):

The village of Dondon sits at the base of the Bonnet Mountain in northern Haiti and is watched over by the magnificent Citadelle Laferriére fortress that sits atop the peak. The massive stronghold, built to protect Haiti from the French in the 1800s, is the namesake for Alltech’s brand of shade-grown, fair trade, gourmet coffee.

In a country ravaged by disaster, it is the Haitian people’s sense of hope and optimism that ensures brighter days are ahead. By providing a sales and marketing channel for Haitian coffee, Alltech Café Citadelle stands as an example of what can be achieved through sustainable enterprise. The driving force behind Alltech’s involvement in Haiti is to create new opportunities that are driven by the unique talents and resources of the Haitian people so that these communities have the resources, expertise and vision for continued growth and development. Furthermore, profits from the coffee are reinvested back into the Alltech Sustainable Haiti Project, which funds two Haitian primary schools and economic development projects in the country.

This is the story of Alltech Café Citadelle, a coffee with a cause. Today, as you savor your Alltech Café Citadelle, know that you have in your hand a cup of hope, a cup of the future, a cup of the finest and most worthy coffee for you to enjoy, while making a difference now. For the people of Haiti who are saying “Merci beaucoup,” you are changing lives one cup at a time. Thank you for joining our mission.

Enjoy your cup of hope!

Quick Facts about the coffee:

  • Haiti is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere and Alltech started the Cafe Citadelle as a means of creating sustainable economic growth in the country.
  • Alltech imports the green coffee and roasts it locally in Winchester Kentucky.
  • Profits from the sale of the coffee go to the Ace Foundation, Alltech’s 501 (c) (3), as part of the Sustainable Haiti Project.
  • Those profits fund the following projects:
    • – Two primary schools in Haiti for which the profits provide TOTAL RESPONSIBILITY, and all that is included in running them: renovation, expansion, teacher salaries.
    • – Community Development, including the coffee business.

This coffee is yummy folks! It’s also Fair-Trade Certified.

You should go check it out and give it a try! You’re doing good for the world if you do!

Happy Trails!

PS: I wasn’t paid to write this post, and Alltech doesn’t know I even wrote it. I simply had to share what a GREAT thing they have going on!

Spread the Love!

About ~The South Dakota Cowgirl~

Jenn Zeller is the creative mind and boss lady behind The South Dakota Cowgirl. She is an aspiring horsewoman, photographer, brilliant social media strategist and lover of all things western.

After a brief career in the investment world to support her horse habit (and satisfy her mother, who told her she had to have a “real” job after graduating college), she finally took the leap and stepped away from a regular income; trading the business suit once and for all for cowgirl boots, a hat, and jeans. She has not looked back.

When Jenn first moved to The DX Ranch on the South Dakota plains, she never imagined she’d find herself behind a camera lens capturing an authentic perspective of ranching, and sharing it with others. Jenn has always been called to artistry, and uses music, writing, images, home improvement, and her first true love of horses to express her ranching passion.

Horses are the constant thread and much of her work centers around using her unique style of writing to share her horsemanship journey with others in publications such as CavvySavvy, the AQHA Ranching Blog, the West River Eagle, the family ranch website, and her own website.

Using photography to illustrate her stories has created other opportunities -- Jenn’s brand “The South Dakota Cowgirl” has grown to the level of social media “Influencer”. This notoriety has led to work with Duluth Trading Company, Budweiser, Wyoming Tourism, Vice, Circle Z Ranch and Art of the Cowgirl, to name a few. She also serves as a brand ambassador for Woodchuck USA, Arenus Equine Health, Triple Crown Feed and Just Strong fitness apparel. Her photography has been featured by Instagram, Apple, TIME Magazine, The Huffington Post, and Oprah Magazine. Jenn’s work has been published internationally, has been seen in several books and has graced the covers of several magazines.

Jenn became a social media influencer by accident when she started to explore Instagram as a way to share her life on the ranch with folks that don’t get to experience it. It’s grown into an incredible platform that she uses to empower women, create an environment for self improvement and share life on the ranch.

When she’s not working, she loves to drink coffee, play with her naughty border collie named Copper, start ranch colts, and run about the country chasing cans. Her mother still thinks she doesn’t have a “real” job.
