At the end of the 2012 Barrel Racing Season, I retired my horse, Gump. He isn’t old, at only 17, but he’s run a lot of miles in his life and his arthritis is pretty bad, despite my best efforts at keeping it at bay.
It’s been good though, because I’m riding Dino a lot more and I’ve got him started on the barrels. And of course there’s my gorgeous yellow horse Avie, who is a bad-cat when it comes to running barrels. I didn’t get to go a lot this past summer because if the pickup wasn’t broke down, the trailer had a broken door, or it rained or I had heifers to calve or what not. It was one thing after another and I’m sure the barrel racing gods meant for me to take the year off.
Happy Trails!

My sweet barrel mare is turning 23. For running all her life she has minimal arthritis but is still slowing down and I know her last run is coming. I hate to even think about it but know she’ll enjoy her retirement. I’m sure Gump will enjoy his too.

Nice run. It’s so fun to ride a good horse. Now you need to post one of Dino and Avie.

Here are runs on Avie- I’d only had him about 2 weeks when I ran him here: https://thesouthdakotacowgirl.com/2012/07/rapid-city-runs/ As for Dino, well he’s not altogether sure there’s any reason to run fast yet!
