Chris Dickinson Photography Workshop: Part 1

July 19, 2017 by ~The South Dakota Cowgirl~ 5 Comments

I had the opportunity to go hang out with my friend and mentor, Chris Dickinson the last weekend in June for one of his annual Photography Workshops. To say I had been looking forward to this workshop might have been an understatement. Chris and his family are so kind, so giving and I honestly am very grateful to have them in my life!

What I learned about lighting, the review of things I already knew — but couldn’t explain worth a poop, and of course the new friends I made, was priceless. If you’re looking to expand your photography knowledge, Puh-Lease, go see Chris at his next workshop. It’ll be the best investment you could make in yourself! The friends I made are adding to my life, through their encouragement and passion. Those are the kind of people you want on your team!

I want to make sure you get the chance to follow all the people who were kind enough to let us photograph them, and as we get through the series, I’ll make sure to pass on all the names of the other workshop participants so if you’re not following them already, you can. Because you should.

Cast of Characters (links will take you to their Instagram accounts):

Renae Cowley

Cole Tubbs

Leann Fox

Hadley Hunting

Matt Ballard (also a workshop participant)

Now, I know why most of you come to this site — to see pretty images, so I’ll share them, a few at a time — so you’ve a little something to look forward to!

Cole Tubbs and his son work together as a team — seriously, this little cowboy stole the show…
Cousins…

Cole Tubbs and his dog take a breather. It was warm that day!

On this particular occasion, the crew had to doctor a few calves/cows for pinkeye. Which meant they needed to be roped, and get an antibiotic shot. Darn, I guess we’ll just have to photograph them doing their job!

Chris really challenged me with my 16-35mm Wide angle lens. Being that close to the action,  sure got my blood flowing!

I love the above image in color, but I also really love it in black and white. Can’t lie about that!

Matt Ballard and Cole are probably telling tall tales right about now…

Until next time…

Happy Trails!

About ~The South Dakota Cowgirl~

Jenn Zeller is the creative mind and boss lady behind The South Dakota Cowgirl. She is an aspiring horsewoman, photographer, brilliant social media strategist and lover of all things western.

After a brief career in the investment world to support her horse habit (and satisfy her mother, who told her she had to have a “real” job after graduating college), she finally took the leap and stepped away from a regular income; trading the business suit once and for all for cowgirl boots, a hat, and jeans. She has not looked back.

When Jenn first moved to The DX Ranch on the South Dakota plains, she never imagined she’d find herself behind a camera lens capturing an authentic perspective of ranching, and sharing it with others. Jenn has always been called to artistry, and uses music, writing, images, home improvement, and her first true love of horses to express her ranching passion.

Horses are the constant thread and much of her work centers around using her unique style of writing to share her horsemanship journey with others in publications such as CavvySavvy, the AQHA Ranching Blog, the West River Eagle, the family ranch website, and her own website.

Using photography to illustrate her stories has created other opportunities -- Jenn’s brand “The South Dakota Cowgirl” has grown to the level of social media “Influencer”. This notoriety has led to work with Duluth Trading Company, Budweiser, Wyoming Tourism, Vice, Circle Z Ranch and Art of the Cowgirl, to name a few. She also serves as a brand ambassador for Woodchuck USA, Arenus Equine Health, Triple Crown Feed and Just Strong fitness apparel. Her photography has been featured by Instagram, Apple, TIME Magazine, The Huffington Post, and Oprah Magazine. Jenn’s work has been published internationally, has been seen in several books and has graced the covers of several magazines.

Jenn became a social media influencer by accident when she started to explore Instagram as a way to share her life on the ranch with folks that don’t get to experience it. It’s grown into an incredible platform that she uses to empower women, create an environment for self improvement and share life on the ranch.

When she’s not working, she loves to drink coffee, play with her naughty border collie named Copper, start ranch colts, and run about the country chasing cans. Her mother still thinks she doesn’t have a “real” job.

Awe, Jenn! Thank you so much for this spotlight on your blog. I was SO incredibly happy to finally really meet you and then the icing on the cake was seeing you AGAIN just a short time later in Rapid!! I just could not have imagined such an incredible array of people at the workshop, including yourself! The teams, the moments, the laughter…just simply one of the best, ever! Thank you for taking time off your barrel schedule and coming out. Somehow, I have a feeling there’s a lot more in store 🙂
