Wednesday the 12th marked the last day of summer for us, here on the ranch. You see, the reason it was the last day of summer here for us, is that Kelsey was leaving the next morning to go back to her mom’s place about 75 miles away. We won’t get to have her back here for a while since she’ll be playing volleyball the first part of the school-year. Since she moved off the ranch last year, while I think she’s adjusted well, I also think that she really hates summer ending, not because she doesn’t like school, but because she doesn’t get to ride her horses at will. Plus she won’t get to see her dad, or uncles or Granny and Poppy, and I’m pretty sure she thinks I’m okay too!
The last day of summer ended with us holding our first ever barrel race here at the place. We only got 15 entries but we had fun nonetheless. We’ll be having them weekly until after September 2nd, and then we’ll maybe have some more, but we’ll have to see what the weather does.
After the barrel race was over and everyone left we got a chance to regroup, eat something, clean up and then we built a bonfire. The bonfire was our way of celebrating what had been, in the words of Zach’s fireside toast- “the best summer ever.”
To top it off, there was a meteor shower that night, so we got to sit and listen to a crackling fire, while watching shooting stars above. I haven’t ever seen a meteor shower before because I’ve never really lived anywhere dark enough to see that many stars that well. It is definitely a sight to be seen. When we left granny’s yard at about 1:30am and arrived back at our house, which is sans yard light, you could see even better the vastness of our universe, and the few more meteors that flew by overhead.
This summer was definitely one to remember and if you ask me, it couldn’t have ended on a happier note. Do I wish it didn’t have to come to an end? Absolutely, but since it did, at least it went out with a bang.
My kids are back to school next week. I know the feeling.
there was a meteor shower around these parts as well.. pretty cool stuff!
I think Im going to cry! Plan some fall barrel races…maybe the one we went to last year. I will be coming up this fall for sure. I wanted to this summer but blw never got called out on assignment till this week. Hopefully the fire season is just starting!
This post makes me go Ahhhh! What a beautiful sight and cozy ending to a day.
Thanks for the help on meatballs. I will definitely give them another try since you took the time to share your recipe.
What a spectacular, and yet sad day. Poor Kelsy. If it's only 75 miles, surely she can come back soon, right?
And I never knew about the meteor shower, until the next day. I would have liked to have seen it. Darnit.
