Tis The Season…

September 18, 2008 by Shauna 6 Comments

For fall shots…fa la la la la, la la de dah!

Yes, it’s fall shot season here on our ranch and neighboring outfits. We have yet to give our fall shots, and have to make it to one more ranch to help them.  Seems like that’s all we’ve done this month, once to three times a week, is help neighbors gather cattle; then we sort.

When we sort it is often done one of two ways (there are others)… But if you want to “pour” the cows then they are sorted off and worked separate from the calves. “Pouring” is the term used if you’re going to put fly spray or wormer on their backs. It works systemically through their skin. In the fall, most cows aren’t given shots- they get their shots at brandings, usually when they are treated for of all things, STDs.

Some people don’t pour their cows during fall shots. If they don’t get poured, we’re able to sort them out and then you’re left with the calves. The calves are always poured, are given a couple or three shots, and if needed, de-horned.

The people that don’t pour them during fall shots, will pour them when they bring them in to Preg-check them. I’m going to get to learn to do that this year, so that should be interesting. I bet I’ll get tired of seeing cow ass.
I’m learning a lot and I love it and I’m done saying “I got to play cowgirl today”, because I reckon, I’ve turned into one.

Spread the Love!

    There’s a really good joke somewhere in here, but I can’t find it.

    So why do them pour them in the fall, instead of spring???

    And do the “band” or “cut” the little boy calves. Just wondering!

    I’ve helped my step-father round up his cows a few times and we send them through a shute, they get their shots and out the other side, but the little boys … poor things. Same with the baby boy sheep. Banded. Turkey Buzzards just love that, if you know what I mean! YUK!

    The bull calves are cut in the spring when they are branded, and the calves get poured in the spring as well.

    And yes, the after branding party includes calf fries. Yum-O!

    You are, without a doubt, the only person I know that can pull off that statement, and have it work on a variety of levels.

    -> slow clap
