Yesterday was an absolutely gorgeous day filled with so much to do that I honestly only sat down at lunch. Needless to say last night I was ready for bed an entire 2 hours earlier than normal.
It started with us rearranging horses and deciding that we needed to bring in all the geldings so we could get our sort. Looks like we’ll finally get to take them to the sale. We tried in February, March and April, and it was too wet to get out with a heavy trailer-full of horses. So hopefully May will be better. We brought all the weanlings in off pasture, and put them in the trap in front of in our barn- the same trap where Shuttle lives all the time, and the same place where Gump lived this winter.
Then Zach brought in the geldings/stud colts that have been on pasture all winter, and we sorted off the ones from our lists that we made a while back. After we got them sorted, I rode Gump and Shuttle and had an absolutely wonderful day horseback! I love them both. And don’t tell Shuttle, but Gump works his way further into my heart every day!! Though Shuttle and I have a connection on a different level, Gump is close to getting there himself!
After I finished riding, I grabbed a quick bite (Granny made some yummy tacos!) and went back to the barn to see the weanlings. I rubbed and scratched on Dolce for about 10 minutes. All the horses are so itchy this time of year since they’re shedding out that thick, insulating winter coat. As an aside, I really can’t wait for Dolce’s half sibling to get here! I don’t expect her to hit the ground before July 1 (look I just assumed it was a filly because that is what I want!) and I’m so excited about it.
I spent the rest of the next hour, rubbing on and curry combing out all the horses in our “to keep” pen. At one moment, Zach and I looked at each other, and went, “there’s still a lot of horses in here. We should count how many we still have to start.” So count we did. Final tally- 14. Not including the horses that are already going that need more rides so we can sell them for what they’re actually worth- they total 5 (Big, Handsome Jack, Dozer, Elvis, Festus, Gozer), plus my two barrel horses; then there’s Lucy (futurity prospect), Hope (our gift horse), Camo (futurity prospect), Uno (who I’m riding for Ve). So I decided I’d see if I could sell at least one of the horses on my keep list to lighten the load. With that said-
Meet Dx Silverjetsbreeze, aka, Ranger. He is exceptionally kind, has great manners, is very gentle, very trainable and is ready to start under saddle. He’s a coming 3yo and he’ll be a late bloomer so he’s not a giant right now. He has been bathed, and will stand quietly to be groomed. He is very friendly, has a gorgeous flaxen mane and is super cute! One of my favorite geldings. I’m pricing him at $300 because I just want him to go somewhere and have a good home, make someone a nice horse (he’s bred to do whatever you want on him) and hear good reports!

I am feeling better about this decision all the time. And the fact that it’s sunny out, I can see mama cows outside my window, and all the blessings that I do have to count, make it easier. I hope all y’all have a great Sunday!
Ps. I forgot to tell you about my first experience of pulling a cow out of the mud. I’ll chronicle that for you later.

Wow, you have a lot of horses to sell. Do you advertise them or take them somewhere? And wow, only $300??? Man I wish I had some land again. I drove by this beautiful house today that’s for sale with what looks like at least a hundred acres, fenced off, barns, ponds, etc. I started dreaming about having enough to buy it, have a bunch of horses, not work and just spend all my time on my ranch. It’s my dream.
I sure hope the weather stays nice for you to haul the horses!
