Well, I’m back with another installment! Not that I haven’t been handling colts all the while – though it’s been intermittent at best. But it’s way past time to start Rival — Fridge’s pasture mate and coming 4yo.
He’s not the gentlest colt to begin with, but then neither was his mother at first but she truly turned into kind mare, and he’s going to be the same way — when he lets down.
This week we made good progress with getting him to follow us around. He’s a bit slippery and less inclined to be with me than most of the other colts around here. I’ve got to get him gentle before I can get him saddled and be riding, so that’s our goal this moment. He’s my winter project and I’m enjoying every moment with him.
There were a couple times when I should have gone right instead of going left, but he was still hooked on pretty good here. I can’t wait to get to the barn today and see where he is. The weather has finally given us a break and it should be nearly 40 today! Yip, yip! Way better than the teens and sub-zero temps we’ve had up until now!
Happy Trails and Happy Horse Handling!
